LGBTQIA2S+ Rights

A rainbow flag waving on a porch.

Everyone in Alaska deserves equal treatment under the law regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity. We envision a state where lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people can live openly, have their identities, relationships, and families respected, and expect fair treatment on the job, at the doctor's office, and in schools, housing, and public spaces. Since our founding, the ACLU of Alaska has worked to ensure equal protection for LGBT Alaskans.

The ACLU has a long history of supporting and defending the rights of LGBT Americans and is proud of our wins around marriage rights at the U.S. Supreme Court and in states around the country. In Alaska, we won the right for transgender Alaskans to denote their lived gender on a driver's license in 2011. In 2014, we won same-sex couples protection against discrimination when it came to tax exemptions given to opposite-sex married couples. And in 2015, we celebrated with the rest of the country when the Supreme Court made its monumental decision to allow all loving, committed couples to marry in all 50 states.
