Martin Luther King Jr. Day Free Legal Help Events

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which falls on the third Monday in January each year, the Alaska Bar Association, with Alaska Court System, Alaska Legal Services Corporation, ACLU of Alaska, and local bar associations, host MLK Day free legal help clinics at locations throughout Alaska. The next MLK Day Free Legal Help Events will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026. No appointment is required. Walk-ins are welcome! Volunteer attorneys will provide brief legal help to low to moderate income Alaskan in need of advice for civil (non-criminal) legal issues like family law, landlord/tenant, public benefits, employment law, probate, or estate planning issues. Our Anchorage, Bethel, and Fairbanks clinics will also have attorneys advising those impacted by Typhoon Halong and helping with disaster assistance applications and appeals. Can’t make it to an event? 24/7 free legal advice is available at Alaska Free Legal Answers, a virtual legal clinic where Alaskans can post civil (non-criminal) legal questions at no cost to be answered by volunteer attorneys licensed in Alaska. Post your questions here.

Las Abogadas

Film Screening: 'Las Abogadas: Attorneys on the Front Lines of the Migrant Crisis'

Las Abogadas follows a handful of immigration attorneys over a multi-year odyssey beginning in 2018 as the U.S. government upends every law to protect those fleeing from violence and war. While the 2020 election brought a moment of relief and great joy for our attorneys as they watched some migrants finally be allowed into the United States, what was supposed to be a hopeful beginning turns out to create even greater challenges than they could have imagined. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and award ceremony honoring a community partner who has been on the frontlines of this fight in Alaska. Part of the proceeds will benefit the ACLU of Alaska.
