The ability to read what we want free from government interference is a fundamental right protected by the First Amendment, but attempts are made every year to ban certain books from public schools and libraries. Books that are written for young readers and those that focus on the experiences of women, people of color, and gay or transgender people are especially at risk of being challenged and banned.

To celebrate the freedom to read, we partnered with the Anchorage Public Library, the Alaska Library Association-Anchorage, and the UAA/APU Consortium Library to plan events for the 35th Banned Books Week from Sept. 25 – 30.
