Join the ACLU of Alaska's Legal Director, Ruth Botstein, for a discussion on the outcome of U.S. v Skrmetti, a recently-decided Supreme Court case weighing the constitutionality of gender-affirming care bans for transgender youth.
In December 2024, the Supreme Court held oral arguments in U.S. v. Skrmetti, a landmark case challenging Tennessee’s categorical ban (SB1) on gender-affirming hormonal therapies for transgender youth on the grounds the law violates the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution by discriminating based on sex and transgender status.
On June 18, 2025, the Court agreed with the Sixth Circuit court that allowed the law to take effect. Ruth will be discussing the decision in detail, and how it impacts Alaskans. Spoiler alert: gender-affirming care is still legal for Alaskan youth, even in light of the Skrmetti ruling.
