This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable.
Fellows receive housing, a $1200 monthly living stipend and a $750 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats. For other questions about the application process, email [email protected].

Title: Digital Communication Fellow
Organization Description: Since our founding in 1971, the ACLU of Alaska has been the premier civil rights organization in the 49th state. The ACLU works to protect the civil rights and individual liberties enshrined in the U.S. and Alaska Constitutions through our litigation, legislative expertise, grassroots advocacy, coalition building, and public education efforts. We strive to ensure that those who have historically been denied their rights are afforded the same protections as everyone else, including people of color, members of the LGBTQ2IA+ community, incarcerated people, immigrants, and Alaska Native peoples.
We address a wide range of constitutional violations and civil liberties issues in Alaska. Examples include:
- Ensuring people’s constitutional rights and humane treatment while incarcerated in Alaska prisons;
- Defending the constitutional rights of immigrants and refugees;
- Defending LGBTQ2IA+ community members and youth from discriminatory policies;
- Expanding access to voting for Alaskans;
- Protecting the free speech rights of state employees;
- Resisting legislative attempts to infringe on the reproductive rights of Alaskans;
- and other issues as they arise.
Position Description:
The Digital Communication Fellow will enhance the ACLU of Alaska’s digital presence and storytelling across social media and web-based platforms. The position is integral to the organization's mission of promoting civil liberties and rights through effective digital communication strategies.
Responsibilities
- Maintain the ACLU of Alaska’s social media platforms, including, but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, X, Threads, and Tiktok.
- Develop digital content such as social media copy, web updates, videos, and emails.
- Create informative and engaging content for ACLU supporters, including graphics and images.
- Develop short-form and long-form digital video stories to elevate impacted Alaskans.
- Monitor social media channels for engagement opportunities and optimize communications using analytics.
- Assist the Communications Director in refining and implementing digital strategies.
- Collaborate with staff to create and implement digital communications plans on civil liberties issues.
- Support community engagement efforts by planning attendance at events and assisting with tabling.
- Provide support for activist engagement related to advocacy campaigns and legal cases.
Requirements
- Experience using TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and X (Formerly Twitter) for advocacy work.
- Experience with brand social media management and familiarity with social publishing tools.
- Demonstrated experience in content creation, graphic design, video production, and audio storytelling.
- Experience developing digital content, including videos and graphics.
- Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop or Canva a plus.
- Excellent communication and writing skills, with familiarity with AP style preferred.
- Goal-focused, self-motivated, organized, and adaptable to new situations.
- Detail-oriented with strong follow-through and ability to meet tight deadlines.
