Although the ACLU is most often associated with litigation, we also advocate for constitutional liberties in our legislative work. When the legislature is in session, we monitor bills, encourage lawmakers to pass policies that protect Alaskans' rights, and work to ensure state laws are in line with the U.S. and Alaska Constitutions.
In the 30th session of the Alaska State Legislature (January 2017 - April 2018), we're working on a broad range of issues including reproductive rights, freedom of speech and association, criminal justice reform, and privacy rights. Our legislative advocacy includes sending letters to the Governor, Senate, and House of Representatives, testifying in hearings, and providing our supporters the tools they need to effectively champion the issues they care about and to participate in our democracy.
On a national level, the ACLU's Legislative Office in Washington, D.C. handles federal and congressional legislative advocacy efforts. Learn about our nationwide priorities and policy platform here.
