Work Term: September 1, 2026 – May 31, 2027

Position Description

The Policy Fellow will support the organization’s legislative advocacy program, with a special focus on the spring 2026 session of the Alaska State Legislature. The ACLU of Alaska Legislative Policy Fellow will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

• Following legislation through the policy process, including monitoring, and reporting back on hearings, and tracking bill versions and amendments;
• Helping prepare for and conduct a legislative reception in Juneau, including paid travel to Juneau if Fellow is available;
• Conducting research on state legislation and administrative policy; and,
• Monitoring regulatory developments relevant to ACLU priorities.

The fellow will be supervised by the Policy Director and will provide opportunities to gain knowledge about the policymaking process, as well as substantive experience in strategic policy advocacy.  Hours for this position will be Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm, ideally at ACLU of Alaska’s office in the Spenard neighborhood of Anchorage. Travel within Anchorage and Alaska may be required, and the ACLU of Alaska will help facilitate logistics and costs.

The Legislative Policy Fellow should possess the following:

• A desire to learn about, and engage in, policy and legislative advocacy.
• A commitment to the ACLU of AK mission, civil rights, and civil liberties.
• Keen attention to detail and research skill.
• The ability to follow through on assignments and meet deadlines.

Alaska Fellows Program Overview

This position is part of the Alaska Fellows Program. All fellows live together, “in community,” in their respective host site. Each host site is unique and remarkable. Fellows receive housing, a $1200 monthly living stipend and a $750 relocation stipend. The fellowship includes facilitated and funded opening and closing retreats.
