Immigration enforcement in Alaska has increased nearly fivefold over the past year, overwhelming the resources of the small but mighty immigration bar. Recent policy changes have shifted the focus of immigration enforcement, and Alaskans with previously considered “safe” legal status—such as lawful permanent residents or refugees—must now also be prepared for potential interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Additionally, once an Alaskan is detained by ICE, they are quickly flown to an ICE detention center in Tacoma, Washington, thousands of miles away from family members, support systems, and potential legal counsel.
Our goal is to empower all Alaskans to know and exercise their legal rights when interacting with immigration enforcement officers, to be prepared both legally and practically for potential arrest by ICE, and to increase access to preliminary immigration-related relief screenings and pro bono representation in bond hearings to keep Alaskans in Alaska during the pendency of their removal proceedings.
Recruitment and Training: Any attorney in good standing with the Alaska State Bar may apply to volunteer with the ILC. Individuals participating in the ILC will receive thorough training on the services they wish to provide. ILC volunteers will also have access to a weekly virtual open office session with an experienced immigration attorney from a partner organization. They will also be provided with template intake forms, legal advice letters, and bond motion materials.
Benefits of Volunteering: Volunteers will provide critical legal services to non-citizen Alaskans and help close the access-to-justice gap for an underserved and vulnerable population. Participation in the ILC will count towards an individual’s annual pro bono service as encouraged by ARPC 6.1. Volunteers will also be covered by the ACLU of Alaska’s malpractice insurance during the course of their volunteer duties. Volunteers who complete certain ILC trainings may earn AK CLE credits.
