The American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska seeks a full-time Paralegal who is mission-driven, organized, experienced, and committed to advancing the civil rights and liberties of people in Alaska. The Paralegal will be responsible for managing and screening intake, file management, and providing other litigation and administrative support to the Legal Department. This position is for one year only, and may be extended depending on funding.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Legal Assistance Intake - Support ACLU of Alaska legal department in processing requests from Alaskans seeking legal assistance by:

  • Maintaining Intake Management System (IMS) database
  • Serving as primary point of contact for Alaskans seeking legal assistance and gathering essential information from prospective clients efficiently and empathetically
  • Analyzing intake trends through IMS
  • Developing, proposing, and implementing process improvements to the intake system as directed
  • Collaborating with team members to analyze and summarize intake information and make recommendations at team meetings

Litigation and Legal Administrative Support - Support operations of ACLU of AK legal department by:

  • Working with attorneys to maintain electronic litigation case files (including but not limited to docketing, discovery, correspondence, etc.)
  • Working with attorneys to prepare, finalize, and file legal pleadings, exhibits, motions, briefs, and correspondence, and assisting attorneys at proceedings
  • Handling physical and electronic litigation case file documents (including confidential, privileged, protected, and sensitive information) by utilizing best industry practices
  • Handling filings and service in federal and state court proceedings
  • Maintaining litigation and department calendars
  • Performing general clerical, administrative, supportive duties and other tasks as assigned

Qualifications

  • Education and experience
    • Five years of paralegal experience preferred
    • Bachelor’s degree or paralegal certificate preferred
  • Or the equivalent combination of proven relevant experience
    • Experience in a litigation environment
    • Experience working with clients of all backgrounds utilizing trauma informed best practices
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint, and Microsoft Power Apps
    • Proven organizational skills, attention to detail, and multi-tasking abilities under pressure
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to work proactively, collaboratively, and independently as needed
    • Ability to work flexibly in a hybrid in-person/work-from-home environment, remaining attentive to the team’s needs regardless of setting

Compensation

This is an exempt, full-time, at-will position. Salary is between $55,000-65,000 depending on experience and includes excellent benefits, including health, dental, life, and disability insurance, wellness days and support, a 401(k) plan with an employer-match, and generous vacation, sick, and holiday leave.
