Anchorage Women's Equality Day

August 26, 2017 @ 1:00 pm
August 27, 2017 @ 2:45 pm

Join us as we commemorate the 97th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote!

The 15th amendment, ratified in 1870, made it illegal for the government to deny any US citizen the right to vote. However, it would take another 50 years for this to apply to women: with the passage of the 19th amendment, the government was prohibited from disallowing any citizen, regardless of gender, the right to vote. However, Native women, Black women, Asian women, and poor women remained disenfranchised through laws barring them from citizenship and unfair literacy tests, poll taxes, grandfather clauses, and voter intimidation. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed racial discrimination in voting and enforced the rights promised by the 15th and 19th Amendments.
