SB 124, sponsored by Senator Cathy Giessel (R-Anchorage), and HB 266, sponsored by Representative Cathy Tilton (R-Wasilla), are yet another attempt to put the government between a woman and her doctor. These bills substitute the will of the legislature for the judgment of the healthcare providers who are best equipped to make decisions for their patients. If passed, they would add unnecessary restrictions on safe, legal abortion and would force physicians to alter how they practice medicine and prioritize the health of the fetus over the health of the woman--a dangerous and unsafe precedent to set.
