HB 236, sponsored by Representative David Talerico (R-Fairbanks) and the House version of SB 120, is a bill concerned with religious marriage solemnization. The ACLU has always stalwartly defended the right to religious liberty, but we are concerned with portions of HB 236 that extend past religious duties and include activities generally considered part of the public sphere--activities that may not be constitutionally protected under religious freedom. Because of these concerns, we sent a letter to the House Judiciary Committee outlining HB 236's constitutional infirmities.

Status: HB 236 did not advance to the House floor during the 29th legislative session.
